The Central Park South

According to Niti Aayog’s Report, 21 Cities in India, which includes Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, will run out of groundwater by 2020. Chennai is facing a major water crisis with a daily water supply of 550 MLD against a demand of 1200 MLD. At a time, when Chennai must make pressing choices towards water conservation, here is an example of a residential community who has set a heartening example to be emulated. The Central Park South is a gated community of 172 apartments located in Sholinganallur with a Total Water Management System installed which helps them in Freshwater Monitoring, Tanker Monitoring and Recycled water Monitoring through which they are reusing their wastewater, even without a CMWSSB sewer line, to its maximum capacity. This has been made possible solely by the decision to implement Real time Monitoring for their Water Utilities from 2015. Their truly remarkable journey towards Water savings, started post the 2015 floods. This residential society faced a multitude of challenges with respect to water and wastewater management prior to the implementation of Real Time monitoring of their Water Utilities. The Sewage Treatment Plant, which was following an MBBR process was not operated properly, which led to poor quality of treated water and raised major concerns among the residents. This led to an increase in dependency on Fresh water and thereby increase in water cost. They also faced a huge challenge in asset management due to frequent failures of electro-mechanical equipment. In December, 2015 Central Park South took the decision to implement a Smart Water Management system with the help of Real-TIme Monitoring to improve their water management system. Real-Time Monitoring system comprises real time data collection, analysis and control tools using Internet Of Things (IoT) and a full array of smart sensors. Using analytics, the system identifies potential issues and helps in proactive decision making to further improve the reliability and the performance of a plant. Improvements in the wastewater treatment process were made, beginning with an introduction of a bar screen to prevent foreign particles from entering into the System. With the implementation of the Extended Aeration process in place of MBBR and with proper guidelines to operate the Plant, the System showed significant improvement in Plant efficiency and quality of Treated water. The health and life cycle of Filter media were further improved with the implementation of backwash of filters using Treated water instead of Filter feed water. An airlift system was introduced for the recirculation of activated sludge to promote the growth of microbes in wastewater.
NOTE: Overall efficiency of the plant is calculated by using Filtration efficiency, Disinfection efficiency & Treatment efficiency. Proper disinfection, which is the need of the hour, was maintained with the implementation of an automatic Chlorine dosing system which helped in maintaining the treated water quality fit for reuse. This was also implemented in their Freshwater system wherein the presence of E.Coli and Coliform was detected and regulated, with the help of an Automated Disinfection system via Chlorine dosing based on ORP followed by monthly bacterial strip testing. With the improvements in the quality of Treated water, Central Park now had the confidence to reuse their STP treated water for multiple purposes such as Toilet flushing, Gardening, Cleaning of Communal areas, in-house Car washing and Ground water recharge. This helped them reduce their Water Footprint and dependency on Fresh water. Over 53% of their daily consumption was now fulfilled through recycled water which led to a 30% savings on water spent. An Annual Savings of Rs 20 Lakhs was achieved in the year 2019-2020 on Fresh Water, by operating the STP at a high Efficiency of 90% Overall efficiency.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board bestowed the prestigious Green Awards to The Central Park South in June, 2019 for their tremendous efforts towards Water and Waste Management and Water savings.
With the current COVID-19 pandemic and with the Lockdown in place, there has been an increase in water consumption and waste water being generated across the country. The Central Park South has, however, successfully managed to reduce their water footprint with 51% recycle water consumption by running their Sewage treatment plant at peak load and without compromising on the quality of the treated water.
